Why continue going if everything only ever gets worse? What is there to hang onto when we simply toil away into old age?
Super Cassette released their second single off of their upcoming record Continue? on October 26th, 2023.
“Path Through The Past” is a brutally honest song grappling with feelings of despair and hopelessness. Filled with lyrics about ex-girlfriends’ dead dogs and inevitable tribulations, this song feels incredibly relatable especially after the events of the last three years. Too often our thoughts are occupied by the past and how it affects our hopes and fears for the future. However, these defeated and honestly human lyrics juxtapose perfectly with the uplifting guitar work and open-ended chord progressions of the music itself.
The track opens with distorted drum beats echoed by playful riffs as it moves into dreamlike vocalizations. We’re quickly welcomed by the bass into the classic, catchy, signature power pop verse and chorus you expect from the band. More dreamy vocalizations before we come back around for more. The shining moment of the track for me is the form change following the second chorus. We ascend with the band, things feel hopeful, then we’re brought back down to the chorus once more with a flurry of distorted guitar strums. The song ends with an inquisitive, descending line in all of the forces along with the line “Things will just get worse”.
But will they? All I can say is that my expectations of this band certainly have not.
Super Cassette’s debut album Continue? releases December 1st, 2023.
